Quantidades pequenas de per\u00f3xido de hidrog\u00eanio gasoso ocorrem naturalmente no ar. O per\u00f3xido de hidrog\u00eanio \u00e9 inst\u00e1vel e, quando perturbado, rapidamente se decomp\u00f5e (atrav\u00e9s da enzima catalase, presente em nosso corpo), de H2O2, em \u00e1gua (H2O) e oxig\u00eanio (O2) com libera\u00e7\u00e3o de calor. Deste modo, quando ele \u00e9 transformado em \u00e1gua e oxig\u00eanio pela catalase, acaba por matar bact\u00e9rias e v\u00edrus anaer\u00f3bicos (que n\u00e3o sobrevivem \u00e0 presen\u00e7a de oxig\u00eanio), pois libera oxig\u00eanio puro, tendo a fun\u00e7\u00e3o de desinfectante oxidante. Embora n\u00e3o seja inflam\u00e1vel, \u00e9 poderoso agente oxidante que pode sofrer combust\u00e3o espont\u00e2nea em contato com mat\u00e9ria org\u00e2nica ou alguns metais como o cobre ou o bronze.O per\u00f3xido de hidrog\u00eanio atua ainda em diversos mecanismos de degrada\u00e7\u00e3o de amino\u00e1cidos (em associa\u00e7\u00e3o com amino-oxidases), por conta de seu poder oxidante elevado.
